The best walks in Snowdonia.

The biggest mountains in Wales, slate villages in the valleys, and pubs at the foot of nearly every route up. The best walks and van-friendly pubs we've logged in the national park.

Graham DoddUpdated 6 Oct 2026

Eryri packs more serious mountain into a weekend than anywhere south of Scotland. Yr Wyddfa is the obvious draw, but the Ogwen valley, the Glyderau and the quieter lakes around Capel Curig are where it gets good.

These are the walks we've done and would do again, best first. Each one shows the nearest pub that lets a van stay the night, so you can finish a walk and sleep within reach of a pint.

Llyn Mymbyr loop from Capel Curig

Capel Curig, Conwy · Eryri (Snowdonia)

5.0(1)1 h 576.9 km · 4.3 mi127 m climbEasyCircularDogs allowed

Komoot loop from the bus stop in Capel Curig. Wooden bridge over the stream (the sheep use it too), a small waterfall that isn't on the map, then past Plas y Brenin and over the bridge on Llyn Mymbyr with the view up to Yr Wyddfa. Back by a ruined stone hut and Pont Cyfyng over the Afon Llugwy, fast water and falls. Mostly unpaved path and gravel with a short stretch of road. Easy going, good for any fitness, and the start is on a bus route.

Torrent Walk Loop

Torrent Walk Campsite, Dolgellau LL40 2AB · Eryri (Snowdonia)

1 h 103.9 km · 2.4 mi107 m climbEasyCircularDogs allowed

A short loop from the campsite gate up the wooded gorge of the Afon Clywedog (Llwybr Clywedog), with falls and pools the whole way and the remains of an old woollen mill and iron furnace beside the path. Up one bank and back down the other. The gorge is protected (an SSSI) for its woodland, otters, dormice and bats. Leave the van on the pitch: walking in from Dolgellau means busy roads with no pavement.

Questions people ask

What is the best walk in Snowdonia for a first visit?

For a first big day, a Yr Wyddfa loop from Pen y Pass is hard to beat if you can get parked or catch the bus. For something gentler, the lakeside loops around Capel Curig give the big views for a fraction of the effort.

Can you sleep in a campervan at pubs in Snowdonia?

Some pubs allow it if you eat or drink there and ask first. The pubs marked overnight on this page are ones we've stayed at. Never assume, and ring ahead, especially in summer.

Is Snowdonia the same as Eryri?

Yes. Eryri is the Welsh name for the national park, and the one the park authority now uses. Yr Wyddfa is the Welsh name for Snowdon itself.
