The best walks in Betws-y-Coed.

The wooded gateway to Eryri, where three rivers meet, and the Llugwy valley up to Capel Curig. Walks from the village and the pubs to finish them at.

Graham DoddUpdated 6 Oct 2026

Betws-y-Coed sits where the Llugwy and Lledr run into the Conwy, ringed by the Gwydyr Forest. Walks here are about waterfalls, river paths and forest lakes rather than summits, which makes it the place to go when the tops are in cloud.

This page covers the village and the Llugwy valley up to Capel Curig, about ten kilometres west, where the mountain views open up.

Komoot loop from the bus stop in Capel Curig. Wooden bridge over the stream (the sheep use it too), a small waterfall that isn't on the map, then past Plas y Brenin and over the bridge on Llyn Mymbyr with the view up to Yr Wyddfa. Back by a ruined stone hut and Pont Cyfyng over the Afon Llugwy, fast water and falls. Mostly unpaved path and gravel with a short stretch of road. Easy going, good for any fitness, and the start is on a bus route.

Questions people ask

Where can I walk from Betws-y-Coed without driving?

Plenty. The forest paths and river walks start from the village itself. For mountain views, the lakeside loops from Capel Curig are a short drive or bus ride up the valley.

Is Betws-y-Coed good for a wet day?

It's one of the best places in Eryri for it. The woods give shelter, and the rivers and waterfalls are at their best after rain.
