About Castleton

Castleton sits at the western end of the Hope Valley under Peveril Castle, with Mam Tor above the village and Winnats Pass leading west.

What's here

Peveril Castle, the Norman keep on the hill behind the village, is run by English Heritage. Below ground there are four show caves: Peak Cavern, Speedwell Cavern (which you visit by boat), Treak Cliff and Blue John Cavern, the only place the Blue John stone is mined.

Walks from the village

Cave Dale starts between the cottages and climbs a limestone gorge onto the plateau. Mam Tor and the Great Ridge to Lose Hill make a loop of half a day, and you can come back down through Hollins Cross.

With a van

Winnats Pass is steep and narrow, and on a busy weekend it's slow going with oncoming traffic. Castleton's main car park is pay and display. The village pubs are used to muddy boots and dogs.
